First Edition. First edition of one of the most important early works of detective fiction. Queen's Quorum #41.
Orczy introduced the eponymous armchair detective (the first of his breed) in the Royal Magazine in 1902, but these, his earliest cases, only appeared in book form in 1909. He is also featured in'The Case of Miss Elliott' (1905) and 'Unravelled Knots' (1926). The present copy is in the original turquoise cloth with gilt lettering and coloured vignette of the old man to front cover.
Meticulous internal mending to split along lower edge of spine. Occasional spotting or marking to margins and slight rubbing to extremities. Faint water marking with partial ring stains to lower cover.
Despite these flaws, a tight, generally clean and quite bright copy, with the vignette clear and intact. All 8 illustrations by Brock present and secure. Good plus copy of a scarce book.
