We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA, the standard the European Accessibility Act asks of online shops.

What that means in practice here: every page is plain server-rendered HTML that works without JavaScript; every control is reachable and visible by keyboard; text and background colours are tested for contrast rather than eyeballed; headings run in order so a screen reader can navigate the page; and the site is usable at 200% zoom and on a slow connection.

Automated testing (Lighthouse) currently reports no accessibility failures on the home and book pages. Automated testing is not the same as lived experience, so if anything here is hard to use, please write to hello@kakapopress.com and describe what happened. We will fix it and tell you when it is done.

One known limitation, stated honestly: most books are shown as a typographic catalogue plate rather than a photograph, because most of the collection has not been photographed. Plates are decorative and are marked as such; the book's real description carries the information. Photographs of any copy are available on request.
