Sketches from Marlborough

E.F. Benson
Perkins, Marlborough · 1888

First Edition. Fred Benson's first book, which was anonymously published in 1888 in an edition of no more than 500 copies. The book sold slowly over many years, but eventually a small reprint was called for in 1905, still anonymous.

This is a copy of the true first edition, dated 1888 on the title page. Most people consider 'Dodo' to be Benson's first book, but this work precedes by 5 years and, although some of the incidents and dialogue are doubtless based on real occurences in his school life, the format is actually of a work of fiction. Publisher's blue pebble-grained cloth with elaborate blind-stamping and titling to front cover in gilt and black.104pp.

Minor rubbing with wear to head and tail of spine, but a clean, sound copy of an extremely rare book.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
