Le Docteur Ox et Le Tour Du Monde En 80 Jours

Verne, Jules, Illustrated by Bertrand, Froelich, Schuler, Bayard, Marie; Neuville and Benett
Paris: Hetzel, 1874, Paris · 1874

First Edition. Very Good. This book unites in one volume, as issued by the publsher's, Le Docteur Ox, as well as the short pieces Maitre Zacharius, Un Hivernage dans les Glaces, Un Drame dans les Airs and Quatrieme Ascension Francaise au Mont Blanc with Le Tour du Monde en 80 Jours.

The latter work was first issued separately in 1873, whilst this is the first appearance of Le Docteur Ox etc in book form. Since both books are rather short (212 and 220pp) Hetzel decided to combine them in one volume and the book contains an extra half-title and title-page for this combined issue, dated 1874. The final page of Le Tour du Monde is coded 1757-73 (i.e. 1873) indicating that first edition sheets of that book have also been used for this issue.

The book is in what I take to be publisher's cloth as it corresponds closely with the style of some other Hetzel bindings I have seen. Scarlet pebble-grain cloth with ruling in blind to covers and spine and gilt spine titling. It is not however an elaborate binding as often found on the large format Vernes, so no polychrome decoration.

Slate grey coated endpapers, edges plain (i.e not gold). Slight sporadic foxing but no inscriptions or grubbiness. Spine a bit sunned and surface rubbing to tail but a very sound, tight copy.

Bertrand, Froelich, Schuler, Bayard, Marie; Neuville and Benett (illustrator).

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
