First Edition. Uk first edition of one of Verne's early volumes, comprising two novellas [Myers 22]. 286pp of text with 50 inserted full-page illustrations (all present), followed by 40pp catalogue dated August 1874 (earliest issue). In the original purple cloth blocked in black and gilt.
Faded, as always with this colour, and the gilt illustration is indistinct in places. The book was also issued in red, green and blue cloth with no priority significance. Peach coated endpapers, all edges gilt, Burn's binder's ticket to rear pastedown.
Neat minor repairs using matching cloth to snags at head and tail of spine. Three of the plates had come loose and have been neatly reglued. Original ownership inscription from 1874 on front pastedown.
A good, sound copy of an increasingly difficult early title. Ferat (illustrator).
