First Edition. First edition in English of one of Verne's classic nautical adventures in translation by Ellen Frewer. 358pp of text with 56 inserted full-page illus. by Riou (all present). In contemporary fine binding of half-leather with five raised bands and gilt spine tooling, marbled paper to boards, marbled endpapers and all edge marbled.
A couple of small school library stamps on tp and one text page. The book has been well handled, with vague grubby marks passim. A couple of pages have at some time come loose but have been expertly reinserted and the book is now sound throughout.
Rubbing with loss to marbled paper at foot of front cover. In spite of these flaws the book shows well on the shelf and is complete. No comparable or better copy available online at time of listing.
