First Edition Thus. Very scarce Hetzel edition of one of Verne's last works, first published in 1905 - the year of his death. This is a copy in the small 18vo format series in which virtually all his novels appeared.
Scarlet cloth with elaborate decoration and lettering in black and gilt, all edges gilt. Numerous full-page illustrations. The book is undated and described as a 'Nouvelle Edition'.
However, the last title in the list of works by Verne is 'Le Pilote du Danube', thereby dating it to 1908 or 1909, since 'Hier et Demain' appeared in 1910. The cloth is very bright and unmarked with just slight sunning to the spine. The half-title has been neatly removed else a perfectly clean and tight copy of one of Verne's most difficult titles, only translated into English in 2001.
