He Knew He Was Right

First Edition. Scarce 2-volume first edition in the original green, sand-grain cloth - primary binding. This novel was originally issued in both weekly parts (32) and monthly instalments (8).

The publisher then issued the complete novel in book form in 2 volumes at 21 shillings. The present set comprises Vol. 1, bound from the parts with stab holes visible in the margin, without half-title (as issued), edges trimmed and lightly speckled pink, and with plain, off-white end-papers; Vol. 2 is as described by Sadleir [Trollope #31] with uncut edges, no stab holes, half-title and yellow coated endpapers. It is curious that, whilst Sadleir goes into miniscule detail about variant wrappers and ads on the parts issues, he makes no mention of binding variants for the cloth issue.

However, despite the internal differences between the volumes they are uniformly bound in the original publisher's cloth, with elaborate decoration and lettering in blind to front and rear covers and gilt lettering to spines. Neat internal repair to head and tail of spine of Vol. 1 using matching cloth and not affecting any lettering. Tear to last page of text of Vol. 1 (no loss) neatly closed using archival tape.

All illustrations present and correct. Occasional light foxing but generally very clean internally. Slight shelf wear and rubbing to corners of Vol. 1 but an attractive and sound set of a Trollope novel that is most uncommon in the original cloth.
