Doctor Thorne

Anthony Trollope
Chapman & Hall, London · 1860

First Edition Thus. Very early edition of this Trollope classic, published in 1860. The ultra-scarce UK first was published in 3 volumes in 1858 and once reprinted in that format.

The first one-volume edition came out in 1859 (3rd ed. overall) and the 4th in 1860. This is a copy of the 4th edition, so-stated and dated on the title page. Collation iv, 480.

As Sadleir rightly notes, Doctor Thorne is one of Trollope's hardest books to obtain in any early edition and no copies of the 3-volume edition have been offered for sale in recent years. The present copy is in a 3/4 leather fine binding probably dating from the early 20th century. 5 raised bands to spine with gilt fillets and lettering with decorative blind tooling. Red leather to spine and corners and red cloth to covers, blue-green endpapers, edges sprinkled red.

Occasional finger-marking and foxing but a perfectly sound and attractive copy of a very rare book.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
