First Edition. Very scarce first edition in original cloth. Sadleir #28.
Smooth maroon cloth with gilt spine lettering and blind-stamped vignettes to front and rear covers. Dark green coated endpapers; all edges uncut. Ad leaf for Chapman & Hall's select library of fiction tipped in, and almost certainly as issued - not noted by Sadleir.
Neat professional repair to small worn areas at head, tail and one edge of spine using period cloth. Spine lettering intact and quite legible. A sound and very clean copy of a rare and fragile book, hardly ever encountered in better condition.
