The Bush-Boys, or the History and Adventures of a Cape Farmer and His Family in the Wild Karoos of Southern Africa
Captain Thomas Mayne Reid
David Bogue, London · 1856
First Edition. True first edition of this scarce early boys' adventure novel by Mayne Reid. Publisher's decorative light green cloth, with blind-stamping front and rear, gilt lettering and illustration to spine. 472pp + 16pp catalogue at rear dated 1856.
Edges uncut, yellow endpapers, Bone binder's ticket on rear pastedown. Original ownership inscription dated Christmas 1856. Woolf #5729 notes that his copy had 11 illustrations not 12 as stated on the title page.
This seems to have been taken by subsequent cataloguers as an indication that the publisher miscounted or the binder left one out. Not so. The book was issued with 12 illustrations and copies with only 11 have one missing.
This copy has all 12, tipped in to face pp [iii], 103, 129, 172, 220, 232, 286, 325, 367, 400, 429 and 447. A couple of them still have the original tissue guards. Vague soiling, fading and slight spine lean; few grubby marks passim, but a sound and generally clean copy.
Uncredited (illustrator).
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
