The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Arthur Conan Doyle
Tauchnitz, London · 1893
First Edition. First Tauchnitz edition in two volumes, here bound in one. Tauchnitz 2896-7.
Green & Gibson A10d. However, their listing of this edition is not particularly accurate.Actually published in March 1893, not November as erroneously noted in Green & Gibson. Reference needs to bemade to Todd & Bowden's monumental bibliography of Tauchnitz.
The first printing of 2896, the only one actually issued in 1893, must list 6 titles by Doyle of the half-title verso and none on the corresponding page in 2897. This is such a set: Todd & Bowden 2896a and 2897a. Later printings, of which there were many, list anything from 8 to 30 titles by Doyle, retained the 1893 date on the title page, but were reprinted as late as 1939.
Before being tempted to purchase a cheaper copy, advertised as a first edition, check this point. Personally I doubt that any of them are first issues such as this set. In contemporary half cloth binding with gilt lettering and rules to spine, speckled edges.
No previous ownership marks. Superficial shelf wear to the marbled paper on the covers but square, tight and tight. An excellent copy of a very rare edition.
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
