A Satan Kutyaja (The Hound of the Baskervilles)

Arthur Conan Doyle
A Magyar Hirlap Kiadasa, Budapest · 1902

First Edition. Very scarce Hungarian first edition of this Sherlock Holmes classic. Published in 1902 (and so dated on title page) - the same year as the first book appearance in English.

Translation by Zigany Arpad (there was another completely different translation into Hungarian in 1905). Possiblythe first translation of this novel into any language. It was originally issued as a paperback pulp and is printed on very brittle paper.

Most copies would have been read and thrown away or simply disintegrated. This copy has been rebound in a half-cloth binding, not preserving the covers. 143pp text. Maroon cloth spine and corners with gilt spine lettering, floral endpapers.

A couple of pages have slight marginal loss, not affecting the text. An extremely scarce and fragile item - the only copy I have unearthed in 30 years of dealing with Hungarian literature in Hungary.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
