First Edition. Important and early study of Hawthorne, which includes a lot of first edition material in book form, being reprints from American periodicals. 113pp biographical sketch followed by 180pp of stories etc. 2pp integral ads, then 32pp catalogue dated 1873. Publisher's original plum-coloured cloth, ruled and decorated in black and lettered in gilt.
Neat internal repair to tear along rear spine edge; slight rubbing to spine lettering and vague grubbiness to cloth. However, a sound, generally clean and decent copy of a scarce book.
