Halalfiai

Babits Mihály
Athenaeum, Budapest · 1927

First Edition. Very scarce long novel by this celebrated Nyugat school author. Undated, but 1st edition from 1927 [Tezla p.56].

Beautiful publisher's Art Deco binding of two-tone drab and maroon cloth with lettering and stylish decoration in orange, black and gold. Integral head and tail-bands, plum-coloured end-papers. The book is too big at 696pp for the delicate binding and most copies have disintegrated under their own weight.

I have only seen 3 copies in original cloth in 15 years of dealing in Hungarian literature, and this is easily the best. Front inner hinge cracked but holding, a couple of trivial marks to front cover and minor bumps to front top edge but a highly desirable copy of an extremely attractive and unusual piece of Hungarian book production, as well as being an important literary first edition.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
