Allati Gazdasag [Animal Farm]
George Orwell
AB Fuggetlen Kiado, FRAMO Publishing, Budapest & Chicago · 1985
First Edition. Extrememly rare samizdat publication of Orwell's classic satire on Communism in Hungarian translation. Naturally the book was banned by the Hungarian authorities and the first sanctioned edition appeared only in 1989, under a different title and in a different translation from the present edition.
This was a joint publication by a Hungarian underground press and an ex-patriate publisher in Chicago. The book was printed in Chicago and then, presumably, smuggled into Hungary for clandestine distribution. Large soft cover with two-colour illustration to front cover and numerous full-page line drawings.
Issued as No. 7 in Szivarvany Konyvek (Rainbow Books), though none of the other titles in the series would seem to be in any way comparable, nor of enduring worth. No translator noted, though the introduction and afterword are both credited, presumably to expatriates at a safe remove from the Communist authorities. An extremely good copy with only trivial shelf wear.
Most unusual to find such a book in this state of preservation - and the only copy of this edition I have come across in 30 years dealing with Hungarian books. Szabo J. Gyorgy (illustrator).
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
