First Edition. First edition in English of this novel from the Rougon-Macquart series. 350pp text with 8 illustrations by various artists. One of the 18 Zola titles issued by the firm of Vizetelly between 1884 and 1888.
This copy is in a contemporary fine binding by Zaehnsdorf. Red half-leather binding with 5 false raised bands, spine lettering and decoration in gilt; marbled paper covered boards and marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Slight rubbing to spine and corners but perfectly sound and internally fine.
Extremely scarce in such nice condition.
