First Edition. First edition in English of this novel from the Rougon-Macquart series. 320pp text with 8 illustrations by various artists. One of the 18 Zola titles issued by the firm of Vizetelly between 1884 and 1888.
This copy is in a contemporary fine binding by Hatchards of London. Half-vellum binding with salmon-pink cloth covers. Six spine compartments with title and author in gilt on red leather labels.
Top edges gilt, others trimmed, marbled endpapers, integral silk marker. Lovely collector's copy with merest hints of age to binding, absolutely spotless internally.
