First Edition. An acceptable first edition copy of this important novel, the cause of some senseless litigation. Maugham was forced to change several names and a large number of cancels were tipped in with the offending names removed.
As a result, the book generally looks quite a mess. This copy- second issue, first state, with cancel title and inserted author's note - is in reasonable shape considering the mauling it received (see Stott p.87-91 for the whole saga). A few ragged page edges but no loss to text; minor water staining to front cover; general signs of age.
A sound copy in original blue cloth lettered in gilt and black.
