The Light of Scarthey

Egerton Castle
Osgood, McIlvaine, London · 1895

First Edition. Extremely scarce first edition of this historical romance set in Lancashire. The author's second novel after the 1891 3-decker 'Consequences'.

This novel was first printed as a serial in the Times Weekly and was issued by Osgood as one of the Times Novels (so stated on half-title).In publisher's russet buckram with lettering and vignette in gilt. 503pp, uncut edges. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on title page to a cousin (Louise Canziani) and dated Nov. 1895. Neat internal repair to split along spine edge using matching period cloth.

Now quite sound and perfectly clean internally. A most uncommon early title from this prolific author who went on to write nearly 40 novels with his wife Agnes. No other copies online at time of listing.

Signed by Author(s).

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
