First Edition. First edition of this rare and interesting Benson novel, his first full-length treatment of things supernatural and, in a sense, his 'Dracula'. It involves an unscrupulous archaeologist and delver into matters occult who exerts evil power (with a view to having his wicked way) over an English rose who becomes possessed by the unquiet spirit of an ancient Egyptian.
This is a copy of the Heinemann first edition BUT in a Boots Circulating Library binding. It is a very well-read copy, textually complete, but not attractive to behold. Numerous pages dog-eared, creased, grubby and loose.
Offered as a reading copy only of a book that's been out of print for nearly 90 years and is desperately hard to find in any edition or condition. Sold with all faults.
