The Descent of Man

Charles Darwin
John Murray, London · 1874

First Edition Thus. Second edition, revised and augmented, of Darwin's most important work after The Origin of Species. The first edition in 2 vols. appeared in 1871 and featured the first mention of the word 'evolution' with regard to man's origins (having studiously avoided this term in Origin).

This second edition was the first in one volume, includes nearly 100 textual revisions and additions, including a 7-page essay by Thomas Huxley. The first printing of the second edition (of which this is a copy) is designated as Tenth Thousand on the title page [Freeman 944]. Freeman notes the presence of a 5-line errata slip, not in this copy and no indication that it was ever removed There was a reprint as 11th thousand in 1875.

Original fine sand grain dark green cloth with gilt spine lettering and blind-stamped frames to covers. Neat professional repair to minor loss at head of spine using identical cloth. Brown coated end-papers.

A clean, sound, attractive copy of one of the most significant works in the history of science, now most uncommon in the original cloth.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
