First Edition Thus. Very scarce early edition of Mary Cholmondeley's most famous novel, recently reissued with intro. by Elaine Showalter as a Virago Classic. Sadleir #555; Wolff #1216.
The novel was an immediate success and went through 5 printings in the first year of publication. This is a copy of the Second Edition, identical with the first other than the Second Edition slug on the title page. Original vertically ribbed burgundy cloth lettered in gilt.
Publisher's catalogue at rear dated Octiber 1899. Very slight spine lean else a beautifully clean and crisp copy.
