First one-volume edition (issued as a volume in the ' Works of Sir E.Bulwer Lytton, Bart.'] of this important novel, first published in 3 volumes in 1841. This edition contains a new dedication and a new preface, both dated Knebworth, 1845. Original publisher's cloth - vertically ribbed tan cloth with gilt lettering to spine and elaborate blind-tooling to all sides.
Tissue-guarded frontis. and extra title page illustrated by Cattermole. 546pp, edges uncut. Minor rubbing to cloth at head of spine and lower corner of front cover but a sound and internally perfectly clean copy of a scarce edition. G.
