First Edition. Very scarce first edition of this early novel by Wass Albert. One of the few books that was published in Hungary prior to his controversial wartime exploits and forced emigration to the States.
Having been viewed as a pariah in his lifetime he has posthumously become one of the most celebrated authors in Hungary with dozens of his books now in print. Original paper-covered boards with cloth spine. Split down spine edge neatly mended with matching cloth.
A lengthy review of Wass Albert's life and works from a 1955 Hungarian newspaper is pasted in to eps and half-title., with an additional commentary on rear blank by a former owner of this book, dated 1973. These writings add to rather than detract from the interest of the book, as anyone intending to read or study Wass Albert's work has to take into account the successive waves of critical praise, political vilification and nationalist rehabilitation which his reputation has undergone. A good sound copy of a very uncommon book, hardly ever seen in Hungary let alone elsewhere.
