Merlin
Beckett, Samuel, Eugene Ionesco; Italo Svevo [Alexander Trocchi Ed.]
Alice Jane Lougee; The English Bookshop, Paris · 1954
First Edition. Merlin vol. 2 #3, Summer/Autumn 1954. One of just seven issues of this very scarce journal edited by Trocchi.
Includes first printings of a short story by Svevo, a play by Ionesco, a long suite of illustrations in red and black by Bartholick and, most notably, the novella 'The End' by Beckett, preceding its publication in French (Nouvelles, 1955) and 13 years before it appeared in book form in English [in No's Knife, 1967]. Both this translation and that published in No's Knife are credited to Richard Seaver in collaboration with the author, but there are substantial textual differences. The version found in Merlin has never been reprinted.
A VG copy in the original green card wraps. Minor bumping and rubbing at head of spine, but clean and sound. George Bartholick (illustrator).
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
