Letters from My Mill [Lettres de mon moulin]

Alphonse Daudet
Trubner, London · 1880

First Edition. Rare first edition in English of this classic book. Translation is by Mary Corey.

Subsequent editions (1893 on) were by Frank Hunter Potter. I doubt that the present translation was ever reprinted as it was clearly made by an incompetent amateur. This copy has numerous pencil notes correcting some of the gross mistranslations.

Trubner was normally a scrupulous publisher and had a reputation for publishing translations, particularly from oriental languages. Why couldn't he find someone who knew half-decent French? Anyway, the firm published this very flawed translation, which precedes all others by many years and is almost unknown to scholars and collectors. Original dark green diagonally ribbed cloth binding with gilt spine and cover lettering and blind-stamped rules. 159pp text, yellow coated endpapers.

A clean, bright copy with just minimal shelf wear and interesting pencil annotations as mentioned above.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
