Sappho - Parisian Manners

Alphonse Daudet
Vizetelly, London · 1886

First Edition Thus. Very scarce first reprint of this famous book. Sixth Thousand stated on title page.

Same year as the first printing, which was probably of 3,000 copies. One of the most successful titles to be issued by the firm of Vizetelly & Co., who published Zola, Flaubert, Tolstoy and Dostoievsky during the mid 1880s. This copy is in the original dark green cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and vignette and other lettering and decoration in red. 275pp text. 24pp catalogue at rear dated April 1886.

All plates present and correct including tissue-guarded frontis and extra illustrated title page. Grey coated endpapers, top edge uncut. Ad for The Ironmaster tipped in at front as issued.

Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine and a few grubby marks passim but a sound and quite attractive copy. Montegut (illustrator).

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
