Berlin Alexanderplatz
Alfred Doblin
Fischer, Berlin · 1929
First Edition. Extremely rare copy of the first edition in first issue dustwrapper. The book itself is one of the highlights of European modernism and it comes wrapped in one of the most famous and elusive of dustwrappers.
In the original smooth, light grey linen, lettered in red and ruled in yellow. Minor superficial bumping and rubbing to the sensitive cloth, but clean and sound. One ownership signature on front free endpaper.
The dustwrapper is complete except for a patch 2-3 sq. cms at the top of the rear panel next to the spine. At some point the wrapper has been folded (presumably to protect it) and there are creases horizontally along the middle and vertically down the spine panel. Edges are rubbed and a few minor neatly closed nicks to head and tail.
Despite some vague overall grubbiness, the wrapper is substantially intact and the front panel - which is where the design is - is complete and shows well. Adverts for 5 books by Doblin on the 2 flaps, including for 'Berge, Meere und Giganten' on front flap, identifying this as a first issue wrapper. Scans sent on request. [WG #24.
EA in OLn u. mit OU. Sehr selten]. Georg Salter (illustrator).
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
