Under the Greenwood Tree
Thomas Hardy
Tinsley Brothers, London · 1876
First Edition. Extremely scarce first one-volume and first illustrated edition of Hardy's second novel in original cloth. This edition was put out by Tinsley using Hardy's name for the first time, following the success of 'Far from the Madding Crowd' (1874).
It is a lavish affair, being bound ingreen cloth over bevelled boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and black and with all edges gilt. It has an illustrated title page, frontispiece and numerous tipped in plates on stiff card, all by R. Knight.
Internally very clean and all plates in excellent condition. A previous owner has stamped their name 3 times on the title page. Almost invisible professional repairs to snags at head and tail of spine using matching cloth; rear inner hinge strengthened with archival tissue.
A sound and attractive copy of a most uncommon book, offered at 1/10th of the price of the 3 volume first in cloth. R Knight (illustrator).
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
