Tisztasag Konyve

Lajos Kassak
Horizont, Budapest · 1926

First Edition. Very rare early work by Hungary's most celebrated modernist painter and poet. This is one of his most famous books, a mixture of poetry and prose, translations of his works into varous languages, photo-reproductions of his artworks and constructivist typography [Tezla #1779].

The book was issued in a facsimile edition in the 1980s due to the fragility and scarcity of the true first. The present copy is however the original edition from May 1926. Small quarto in card covers.

The front cover is a photocopied reproduction; rear cover is original. New cloth spine. The preliminary pages of the book would appear to have been pasted down to the card cover.

However, there is no substantive loss to the contents as the book starts with the title page in black and brown followed by a 7-page introductory essay all in capitals. Included in this volume is Kassak's most famous poem - "A lo meghal, a madarak kirepulnek". 115 numbered text pages followed by 8pp plates and a constuctivist advert in red and black. Rear cover grubby.

Contents clean and sound. A slightly flawed but nonetheless quite presentable copy of a desperately scarce book, the first I've been able to offer in 15 years of dealing in Hungarian literature. Kassak Lajos (illustrator).

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
