The Green Carnation

Robert Hichens
Heinemann, London · 1894

First Edition. Rare first edition of this anonymously published satire on Decadence, the hero, Reggie Hastings, being a thinly veiled Oscar Wilde. Issued simultaneously in cloth and paper in Heinemann's short-lived Pioneer Series.

This is a copy of the hardback issue in original green cloth lettered in white. 3-colour series title page precedes half-title and title. 183pp followed by 20pp catalogue dated August 1894. Printed on heavy, very brittle paper, few copies have survived intact. Meticulous repair to wear at spine using matching cloth; endpapers professionally replaced using 100 year old paper.

A brilliant job if I may say so, having done it myself. Now a perfectly sound and attractive copy of this quintessential title from the Naughty Nineties.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
