Stephanie Wohl
London: Ward & Downey, 1890, London · 1890
First Edition. Near Fine. First Edition.
Gorgeous copy of an extremely rare book. The sole edition of the only book to appear in English translation by this Hungarian novelist who died in 1889 at the age of 41. It is a Society novel and romance which met with great success in Hungary, France and Germany, but seems to have made little impact in Britain.
The physical book is truly a delight, being bound in stippled gold cloth and lettered in scarlet and black. Although quite simple it is one of the most arresting late 19th century bindings I've come across. 316pp +2pp publisher's list, pink floral endpapers, top edge uncut, frontis portrait of the late authoress. A book which was almost certainly read once and then lovingly shelved by several generations for well over a hundred years.
Probably the best extant copy of this book.
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
