First Edition. Very rare first edition of one of Maine de Biran's most important works, published posthumously under the editorship of V. Cousin.
This copy is almost certainly the best preserved in existence since it is not only in the original grey paper wraps, lettered and ruled in black, but it is uncut and unopened throughout, apart from one 16pp section. 8pp integral publisher's ads; i-xlii editor's preface dated 1er mars 1834; 1-402 text; [403] table de matieres. Original grey wraps with one small loss 3 x 1cm near top of spine, not affecting lettering and slight wear to leading edge of spine, else quite intact. Uncut and unopened with light foxing throughout.
