First Edition. Very scarce work by the famous Central American traveller, Lucien Biart, his first book in first edition. 16pp publisher's catalogue, dated 1862, announcing the present title as in preparation and erroneously giving the author's name as Briard. 3pp preface by the author dated Orizava, janvier 1862, followed by 327pp of text. Contemporary full-cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and blind-stamping to front and rear covers and spine.
All edges lightly marbled and with bright blue endpapers. Minor, unobtrusive water staining along top edges, passim else a clean and sound copy. A rare and important work, recording Mexican life in the mid-19th century on the basis of Biart's many years of residence and travel there.
