John Holdsworth, Chief Mate

William Clark Russell
Sampson Low, Marston, London · 1880

First Edition Thus. Attractive first one-volume edition of this early nautical novel in the publisher's stylish red cloth. John Holdsworth was originally published anonymously in 3 volumes and once reprinted in that format.

Following the success of Wreck of the Grosvenor, Low, Marston decided toreissue it giving the author's name. Designated on title page as third and cheaper edition, and in the standard novels binding of scarlet diagonally ribbed cloth, richly decorated in gilt and black, bevelled edges. 32pp catalogue at rear dated November 1882, top edges uncut, original sepia coated endpapers. Very minor scuffing to extremities, slight spine sunning and ownership inscription in purple pencil on verso of front endpaper.

A clean, sound copy, with the binders' ticket of Bone & Son still in place on rear pastedown. Given that the 3-decker first is now nigh impossible to find (and would command many, many thousands in the currency of your choice) this is the earliest edition that it is reasonable to aim for as a collector - and even this edition is a rarity.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
