Alphonse Daudet
Hutchinson, London · 1894
First Edition Thus. First edition in a revised English translation by Ernest Vizetelly. The book first appeared under the Vizetelly imprint in 1880, and was in fact the first book the firm issued.
It folded a decade later after the obscenity trial and parts of its catalogue were picked up by Chatto, Unwin and Hutchinson, always making sure they avoided the same fate by Bowdlerizing texts where necessary. The changes made here are principally stylistic improvements rather than self-censorship, plus the illustrations appear for the first time. Thick 8vo in publisher's vertically ribbed navy blue cloth, lettered and decorated in silver and grey-blue, top edge uncut, black coated endpapers.
Slight spine lean with rubbing at head and tail of spine but quite sound and perfectly clean internally. George Roux (illustrator).
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
