Dombey and Son
Charles Dickens
Tauchnitz, Leipzig · 1847
First Edition Thus. Todd & Bowden's #119-121 Ba issues (3 vols.). One of the most interesting Tauchnitz editions in that the first printing both precedes the UK first of 1848 and exhibits significant textual differences.
The book went through numerous reprintings, with a resetting of the text after 1868, but all title pages continued to show 1847 as the publication date, as was usual for Tauchnitz printings. This set dates from 1894, with ads for May, October and May respectively on the rear wraps of the 3 volumes, and a catalogue for November 1895 at end of Vol. 3 (these particular variants unrecorded by Todd). Tauchnitz volumes in original wraps from this early are now quite scarce, and particularly in such nice condition.
Paper and covers unfoxed, unsunned and bright with just minimal shelf wear. A highly desirable set, and an important edition of this Dickens classic.
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
