1st Edition. Extremely scarce first edition in English of Tolstoy's earliest successful work. Issued by Vizetelly after the publication of both 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina'.
In the publisher's smooth blue-green cloth, lettered in red and ruled in black. Tissue-guarded frontis. portrait ofthe author. Charcoal-grey coated endpapers, top edges uncut.
Trivial shelf wear and slight sun fading to spine. Rear endpaper slightly split along gutter but holding. Beautifully preserved copy with no previous ownership marks and text perfectly clean.
