A Winter at Mentone

Hare, Augustus, J.C.
Wertheim, Macintosh and Hunt, London · 1862

First Edition. First edition in original cloth of this extremely scarce travel guide by Augustus Hare (1834-1903). Undated but issued in 1862 [CBEL4, 2355].

As well as being the prolific author's first work on foreign travel, he claims that it is the first published guide to Mentone or Monaco. Pages xxviii + 204 with a large 2-colour folding map and four plates. Blue pebble-grained cloth gilt spine lettering and decoration and blind-stamped rules.

Edges trimmed, pale yellow end-papers. General surface rubbing to cloth with some fading, particularly to spine. Inner hinges strained but neatly reglued.

A desperately scarce and important work from an obscure publishing house. No other copies on ABE at time of listing. Quite sound and, apart from some light foxing to plates, internally clean.

Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
