A Kiralyne Nyaklanca [The Queen's necklace]
Antal Szerb
Bibliotheca, Budapest · 1943
First Edition. Extremely scarce first edition of this true story concerning Marie Antoinette, turned into fictional form. Most unusual original binding with a grey cloth spine and shiny stiff brown boards which look plastic but are paper covered card.
Black lettering to spine and vignette illustration to frnt cover. Extremely fragile war-time production, accounting for the very low survival rate. Title page in red and black.
Neat restoration to wear along spine edges but internally spotless. Szerb Antal has recently been rediscovered by the West and many of his works are now available for the first time in English translation. A rare opportunity to acquire one of his most important works in the editio princeps.
Written by Dr Jeremy Parrott, who has the book in his hands. Nothing here is generated from a catalogue record.
